Bienvenidos a Honduras, estimada vocera y congresistas.

Start doing the right thing: Honduras without weapons, Honduras without war, Honduras without JOH.

Welcome to Honduras, dear spokeswoman and congressmen. This is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, but at the same time, a country that expels hundreds of compatriots every day due to the denial of a dignified future.

We are not naïve, and we know the political motivations of your visit, however, we do not want to miss the opportunity to clarify what is necessary from our vision of indigenous peoples, women and defenders of life.

Given the questions about the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of Hondurans to the north, it is necessary to point out the direct responsibility of the current drug mafia regime in power and the situation of extreme poverty, violence, unemployment, inequality, inequity and instability in which Honduras is submerged with the regrettable support of the U.S. government.

The current situation and government are the result of the coup d’état backed by the US administration 10 years ago and the erroneous policies and actions of successive US governments, which have backed all the violence against our territories and our bodies.

Militarization and dispossession have taken a very high cost of blood for Hondurans. Proof of this is the unpunished political femicide of our Berta Cáceres. Vilfully murdered by Honduran military trained in the United States along with the mafia economic structure of the Atala Zablah family.

The same military and economic structures that are involved in and maintain the corrupt and mafioso drug regime of Juan Orlando Hernandez that every day represses with extreme violence and expels Hondurans to a future of uncertainty to the north.

To prevent the forced displacement of thousands of Hondurans to the U.S., economic support for this regime must be stopped. The financing of the military and police repressive apparatus must be stopped until crimes such as that of Berta Cáceres are fully clarified and all those responsible are brought to justice. You have that possibility in your hands and you must take advantage of it.

Passing the Berta Cáceres Act is the first step toward doing the right thing in seeking justice for our societies and preventing more deaths and displacements in Honduras. It is the right way to ensure that children and young people should not leave their country to seek the future of prosperity and dignity that they should have in their own land.

Given in the city of Tegucigalpa on the 10th day of August.
